I know this has probably been discussed more than a few times but I just got my hydro bill and the total ended in 16 cents. I'm wondering if the bank has to take the penny if I add it in with the rest of the cash. The penny is still legal tender, isn't it? So does that mean the bank HAS to accept it? They don't stiff me if I give them two dimes for the sixteen cents. they take the four cents that's left over and put it into my chequing account which actually puts me out 4 cents anyway because I can't get any pennies from the bank. So if I can give them the exact amount of the bill, I'll be a happier camper! Anybody know for sure?

Pennies are still legal tender but you must now use them 5 at a time. you could try giving 16cents but why would you want to give them a free penny, with rounding your bill ends in 15cents if you pay cash.

Since you are paying the bill at a bank I would think it would be no problem with them taking one penny. I recently purchased US cash for a trip at my BMO, the amount I had to pay ended in .13; I happened to have 3 pennies on me so I used them and all was well. The banks aren't supposed to be giving out pennies, but they still take them.

If you don't want to pay for it stop using it. Turn that big black switch at the top of the panel to the Off position and call to have it disconnected completely. No more hydro bill. Technologically advanced alternatives or Low tech simplicity.

The bank will take your cent but you don't need to give them one in that instance bobberbear. Cheque cashing always rounds up, feels like a win also.

@ Bm0ney Quote: If you don't want to pay for it stop using it. Looks like you got the job at the Canadian mint. Plus I help a lot of seniors what you said is crazy and sad ,i see hydro taking almost 75% OF THEIR MONTHLY INCOME AND AFTER RENT THEY HAVE NOTHING LEFT . Go out in your community and talk and help them it's a good felling.

Good thinking DBM. I don't know why I didn't think of that. They have to round it off at 15 cents! Cool! Bm0ney - I have no idea of what you're talking about when you say to turn the big black switch off. I'm not complaining about paying the bill. Just asking whether the bank still has to take a penny! yingyang - don't know what you're running but it sounds excessive. You must have electric heating. Thanks Rusty 1!
