I found this toonie in one of my searches. It has etches or waves in the sky and all around the bear. Is this a rippled coin? Only the center core seems to have the lines, not the outer ring.

IMO a ball point pen constantly moving back and forth and indenting the marks. Hence the half round groove look.

the lines outside the core are PMD ..i would take better pic try to eliminate the flash..it looks almost like a 1999 one I saw a little back for sale..just hold on to it until you get a final judgment .....

I'm glad that Eddio mentioned seeing a similar 1999 one. I went and did a search a little differently and found this coin:

Rippled-Core?.

They look very similar?

Wow!, its the rare "northern lights variety":-P
This has to be PMD, if it were real then I'd expect the design to be weaker and I'd also expect the "rippling" to be on the outer core as well since both parts are struck be the same die.
Sorry, definitely PMD to me
Feel free to call me Will.

It is a 1996 coin. I know they did it with the p reassembled German planchettes and the Canadian Planchettes later on. The pens seem to be too thick to leave such fine lines, and anything sharp would only remove metal, but the lines outside the core seem to be about the same thickness. Some of the lines seem to go through the bears face and some of the ice and it does look different than the Nunavut one. I lean towards PMD myself. I tried to take a better picture for Eddio but couldn't. The close up, though makes me lean towards rippled. Thank you all for your help. It looks like I'll have to think about this one longer.

I dont know what the pressure is for toonies but the Philly mint uses around 60 tons (120,000 Lbs) pr sq inch for quarters, I would think even if the core had these lines prior to strike it wouldnt have any after. Just an opinion
