so I was doing some shopping in my local afghan bazaar, and this one guy had some coins from the 1790's. I obviously didn't buy them because my first reaction was they were fake, but I was still curious and inspecting them and listening to the sound of the drop. am I dumb for actually thinking they could be real. its fake right?

You can place the likelihood of them being real at something like 0.001%. To be clear, that's "one one-thousandth of one percent."

If the price was $1 each I would take a gamble.

If not I would get my Red Book or large blown up photos printed from the internet and go back next week with a loupe and try my darndest to convince myself they were legit if they looked like the pictures.

I would also gauge their authenticity based on the other items the seller had for sale.

If the seller has a booth of name brand clothing and purses for $10 each and a bunch of new release CD's and DVD's for $1 each I would think the coins would be 99.99% fake.

There was a seller many years ago at the local swap meet who had cheap tools. I asked if he had any good tools and he had a box of Snap On, Mac, Matco, etc hidden under the table so no one shoplifted them. I scored a bunch of good tools for 10 cents on the dollar and exchanged a few with my dealer for new ones under warranty.

There are some deals to be had at swap meets and the such but you have to know what you are looking at.

If they are real, they belong in the hands of a numismatist!

So Ddave, the odds you propose are 1:100,000. The most recent Powerball jackpot odds were 1:175,223,510. I think your numbers deserve a rethink, as I, although purely subjectively, would suggest that a Powerball ticket would be a better investment than one of these coins.
