1981 LMC - First I thought someone etched "87" but then ?

Any thoughts about this ?

The reverse is normal with no damage.

Definitely Post mint damage. Most likely with an Etching tool or maybe even drill bit

If this was done with a etching tool or a drill you would not have the impression marks on the left as if it was stamped. The marks would be really rough and jagged.

Well just to add to the mystery, I while back I sold this lot of coins on ebay. Note the top coin...

Someone's a Sidney Crosby fan - engraving tool, even shows the difference in "hand" writing.
