Hello everyone! I have coins in old 2x2's and old pvc flips. Some are bronze, some are silver (nothing special). Anyhow, because I am anal, I am going to switch the coins out for saflips. For added protection, I am going to buy an "impulse sealer" and seal each saflip. Here are my questions:

(1) Will heat sealing the Saflips cause a release of any gases that become sealed in the saflip? I see a lot of people heat seal saflips so maybe I am being paranoid.

(2) Do I need to seal all sides, or just the side the coin slips in? I want to make sure it is completely sealed.

(3) I will be storing the sealed flips in a box. Do I need a desiccant like silca gel in the box?

(4) What steps do I need to take to ensure that any residue on the coins from my touching the coins (and any oils on the prior pvc flips and 2x2s) is removed and the coins are ready to be preserved in the saflips for many years? Wipe them down with a cloth?

DONT wipe them or clean them in any way! Hold them by the edges.

I could see doing this if the coins are extremely valuable, but than again if they were you would want to have them slabbed. Ancient coins are not like modern coins. They are not meant to be locked away behind plastic, they should be handled. Heat sealing your coins in plastic flips IMO is not a good idea. But they are your coins and if that's what you want to do heat sealing is not going to hurt them.

Hi ditrasetman,

Here's a link to a previous thread about Kointainer Saflip and Saf-T-Flips that should be useful. I use acetone for removing oils and pvc residue. Acetone and Coins

Wiping can scratch a coin and could negate the protection you are trying to provide. Humidity and Coins

I should add that wiping/cleaning modern coins is much more frowned upon than cleaning ancients, which when done correctly is an accepted (and fun!) practice. My wiping warning is best directed toward moderns.

Don't seal them in! You will want to handle them and so will your friends (if you every show your coins to friends). I know many serious collectors of ancient coins and none (none!) have them sealed in anything.
