Let's say a fairly valuable raw coin bought from ebay, and sent out to be graded, and it comes back as genuine, but with a details grade. Is the buyer obligated to keep it? Is that the risk one takes in these situations?

If the coin is bought "Raw" then that is the risk taken by the buyer.
Normally raw coins are sold at a discount to graded coins and if they don't grade as high as you expect then that is just bad luck or judgment on the buyers behalf.
If however the coin comes back as not genuine then I imagine that there would be a case for "redress"

Agreed with trout. If it comes back fake you're entitled to a refund if you can prove its the same one. However if it didn't grade how you wanted that's not grounds for a refund. Things are sold as is and there's a reason why graded coins have the premiums they do.

The only exception I would say is if the seller personally gives an assurance it would grade as say an ms 66. Then the seller is adding the assurance themselves which they have the right to do if they want. Otherwise a raw coin is what was purchased which is what the seller was contacting to deliver.

I think if the dealer promises either specifically for the coin in question or in the cut-and-paste blurb, that their coins definitely are not cleaned, and the reason the coin is detailified is because of cleaning, then you certainly do have a case for "significantly not as described". But otherwise, no.

Need to see the listing to make this determination. My gut says, "no way", but I need to see what claims the seller made before making a determination.

So if the seller says a coin is EF and it comes back from a TPG as MS-63, should you send the seller the additional money? Using a TPG for your lack of experience/knowledge is unfair to the seller period! If you can't decide on your own after receiving the coin and returning within a normal return time, then you shouldn't be buying raw coins.

This is more true than many people realize. Buying a raw coin when you don't know, even the basics, of grading, is a crap-shoot at best. Especially from a photo on ebay, which is the epitome of "buyer beware"

While the constant barrage of "grade this coin please" and "what do you think this coin will grade?" can get a bit pedantic here, it does provide invaluable practice and insight, for the novice, into how and why coins reach a certain grade.
