Hi people, I just got my hands on this coin (my first) and wanted to know if people had any details on the symbols.

I'm 99 percent sure this is the coin - http://www.bonannocoins.com/l_papiu...pe_id=198.00

I will try and get photos up ASAP. Any info on the coin would be great.

Thanks

Sorry, just found the Roman coins section. If the mods could move this to the Ancient, Greek, and Roman Coins thread, that would be great.

I believe this is type 75, Trade Guild: Farmers and Shepherds
The device on the obverse is a short Modius and on the reverse is a tall modius.

Nice coin!

If maridvnvm stops by, he can answer any question you may have about the type. He has an extensive collection.

You have already found the best website for the series.

Thanks - I was lucky to find a nice little shop. I get the feeling the guy running it just loves collecting and simply wants to share his hobby.

You are quite correct with your link. This is symbol variety 198 in RRC.

It is worth noting that the symbol pairs on these coins are created as a die pair i.e. this obverse die is ONLY used with this reverse die. There are a total of 232 die pairs that have been identified to date with a new die pair being found every now and then. Richard Schaefer at the British Museum is compiling a definitive database of the known dies.

There are thought to be 246 potential die pairs to be found due to one die pair having CCXLVI on both sides.

It certainly isn't RRC 75 as echizento speculates as it looks like my example below:-

L.-Papi-Roman-Denarius-79Bc

I have around a dozen or so die pairs in my small collection of the type including previously unknown die pairs that are still the only known examples (these are included in the currently known 232 varieties).

Regards,
Martin

Thanks for the update Martin. It might be time for me to invest in a good book categorizing the coins.
