I have the Whitman guidebook, titled "The Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards", 6th edition.

It's not quite everything I'm looking for, but it does have its pluses. Can anyone suggest another one?

In THIS book:

The Good:

-It has great information about the history of coins and coin grading standards.

-It also has great general information about TPGs, counterfeits, storage, conservation, etc.

-It has a wonderful section that discusses eye appeal and its importance. They provide excellent color photographs of different coins of various assigned grades. Then they go on to critique each coin, and point out its positives and negatives. This was a real eye opener for me and really got me looking for quality examples, not just a grade.

The Bad:

-The pictures it provides for grading are black and white and they're not very detailed.

-The descriptions of each grade could stand a tab bit of elaboration. For the Mint State grades they use the same generic description for every coin.

The only other grading book I've bought is the one by PCGS. The descriptions are really good but there aren't that many photos

I use the ANA GRADING STANDARDS 6th edition by Bressett& Bowers I find it to be the best grading reference book out there at this time.

I have the same book as yours, and I also have the 18th edition of Photograde. I got it off of ebay for under $6 shipped. I prefer the ANA book, but the photograde book isn't that bad. It does have some better pictures, though.

Photograde. There's a reason it hasn't gone out of print since 1970. But the descriptions are also pretty brief but that's also how it is in the Brown and Dunn which was the ANA's official guide before Photograde became the official guide. It is also only for circulated grades.

If you want more tips on grading try (Here it is again) Grading Coins: A Collection of Readings/Richard Bagg & James J. Jelinski. Richard Long's articals on grading circulated coins is worth the price of the book alone which would probably only be $10 anyway at ABEs.

ANA Grading standards is a great book. There are a couple decent books on coin grading out there today.

Don't have any books on grading. Would not buy one either. It appears that every dealer at coin shows is already an expert at that and they are all different. Too many times when people send in a coin for the second time to a grading service it comes back different. I'll stick to guess work.
