I got outbid on this one, but am curious to know what is the deal with this coin.

Some of the rays look like keys and "REPUBLICAMEXICANA" is shown as a single word. Is it a contemporary piece? Riddell does not list any counterfeits from Zacatecas dated 1831.

Yes, I agree it looks off. If I had to guess I would say non-contemporary counterfeit.
