Not all countries are as stable, politically or economically, as the United States, and their coinages often reflect this. In this particular case, although the Greek king was overthrown in a military coup in 1967, Greece was technically still a monarchy up until 1975 when the Republic was founded, and this messier-than-usual transition was reflected in the coinage. Between 1970 and 1976, there were actually four different-looking 1 drachma coins in circulation.
