I am fairly certain this is a fake coin.

Shame as it is my favourite coin out if the bunch. Still, think I'll get it checked for confirmation.

Perhaps the third party approach of XRF may help.

Luckily, I live in and Ancient city that was modernised by the Romans called Exeter - or ISCA as they called it back then - from about 35AD to 410AD. As a result we have an extraordinarily museum Founded in 1868 in Exeter (just underwent a £24M refurbish - amazing place if you're ever around this way). The Royal Albert Museum is virtually on my doorstep, and they were more than happy to give me their appraisal. In fact I managed to arrange a meeting with the main Curator and he was able to give me extra information on a couple of other Roman coins in my possession. I didn't realise how politically charged this time frame was, and this is reflected in the coins - so many variables. Anyway I digress, after studying the Corinth he was more than happy with the authenticity, thank goodness. So far so good.

Interesting. How did the curator explain away the casting pearls and soft mushy details? What is the name of the curator at the museum?

I pointed them out to him and he said he wasn't sure, but he then went on to point out a few other aspects of the coin that sat well with him. I was thinking about mentioning his name but I thought it slightly unfair to do so after being him being so accommodating. Its not difficult to find out however if you're keen. It only took me one phone call. It's not definitive but it's positive. I just thought it was a good idea to get another opinion.

This is the next stage. It's been sitting in my desk for a number of years, so it'll wait until the next collectors fair is in town, or another opportunity will present itself I'm sure.

Every bullion dealer worth his salt should have a hand held XRF instrument. Dunno what testing fees may be charged, but should be relatively inexpensive.

Otter, you want to compare it with cast fakes. One of the points of suspicion on this coin is the poor detail on the figure of Pegasus. The uncontrolled blob of metal on the hind legs is not right. The detail of the left wing (on the facing side of the body) is mashed down and not well defined as it usually is on examples showing this much relief. The feathers of the right wing are stuck together in several places. To my eye these all look like casting errors; not part of original production. These staters usually present with very good style. This one, not so much. Quote: I pointed them out to him and he said he wasn't sure, but he then went on to point out a few other aspects of the coin that sat well with him. He wasn't sure? What "other aspects" did he point out? Did he show you anything to compare?

Just to be clear: I'm not trying to sell it, or certainly would not attempt to do so without the proper consultation. I appreciate your kind thoughts and understand it's been flagged as a possible fake. Please understand I'm absolutely fine with this outcome. Its been in my desk for years, and there it'll probably stay.
The Royal Albert Museum: We talked about various coins that I brought down for him to see, as there was no point in just bringing the Corinth. I didn't record the conversation but he was able to put my mind at relative ease - which is all that really matters for the moment, your comments aside of course. I'll endeavour to conduct an XFR when the opportunity arises, and be sure to post back.
