I know these date from around 320bc with Pegasus on one side and Athena on the other, but it's the man with the 'stick' (sorry to the purists) behind Athena that I can't seem to find a reference for. Any advice offered about the coin would be very welcome. Thank you.

Yes, it's definitely similar, but just after having seen the http://www.wildwinds.com recommendation in another post for Corinth Staters , I think I may have tracked it down (?): http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/gree...l_1076.3.jpgCorinth AR Stater. ca 345-307 BC. Pegasos flying left / Helmeted head of Athena; D-I Artemis with torch, in field. What a cool coin to hold. Starting to get into this!

I don't like to comment on authenticity but I am not convinced that the original post coin is authentic. (I really hate to be "that guy" who screams fake) It appears the details are a little mushy and has some particular surface issues. I think I see casting pearls at the 7 o'clock position and 5 o'clock position. I would like to see some other opinions on that.

Hmm interesting. Anything I can do to test this theory? I acquired this coin as part of a small collection, and it's the one that stands out as one of my favourites. Shame if it was fake - but at least glad I didn't buy it.

The weight of the coin in grams is a could diagnostic but there are fakes of correct weight. This a common, fairly expensive and sought after coin. The right conditions for unscrupulous folks to prey on collectors. Weight it! Should be well over 8 grams, if the wear is honest than I would expect this coin to be in the low 8's

I don't suppose you could link me to an example of a fake that shows more obvious casting pearls by any chance? Not having any joy finding one.

I could not immediatly find a fake match, alass that does not mean its real.
I would look at dr. Illya Prokopov's fake list search Corinth and or Akarnania.
I would also look at forgery network.
Both sites dont cover all fakes. only ones that are published. If you carefully look through them you will see many good and bad fakes. It will give you some idea of what to look for.

Might be worth doing an XRF test on this one. XRF is non destructive, and relatively cheap to carry out. It tests for elements on the surface only. In this case, it would probably also do in that deep pit in front of the nose. Comparative proportion analysis of elements other than silver is what you look out for.

Sorry about the delay - The coin weighed in @ 7.42gms. I'm glad to say it's not been listed on dr. Illya Prokopov's fake list..so far so good. It's not magnetic either.

I'm fairly sure it's just a nice clean example.
