1955 Lincoln With Gouges And Mashed Liberty, What Is It?

I found this 1955 Lincoln a while ago and it has always bothered me because I don't know what caused the damage?

There are big gouges on Lincoln it the shape of what a paint brush would do, and also the LIBERTY is very mashed.

Also some strange lines on the reverse on the wheat stalks. Any opinions on what this is? Thanks!
