Quarter Leads Heritage Auction

An 1827/3 Capped Bust quarter restrike that sold for $126,500 is the top lot in Heritage Auction Galleries' sale at the Summer Florida United Numismatists show in West Palm Beach.

The Heritage cataloger specified that the die rust and other markers on this piece indicate that it is from a later group of restrikes, from which about a dozen pieces are known. This one was graded Proof-66 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp. It sold to an Internet bidder.

The total prices realized in the July 12-13 auction was not available by press time. All prices reported here include buyer fees.

An 1893-O Morgan dollar in NGC MS-65 came in next at $115,000.

"Unlike the dull luster seen on many examples, the surfaces on this piece are bright with the semi-prooflike sheen that is sometimes encountered," the cataloger wrote, also noting a slightly weak strike. The coin, won by a phone bidder, was from the Reuben Reinstein collction.

A gold 1807 Capped Bust $5 graded MS-65 by Professional Coin Grading Service brought $103,500 from an Internet bidder. "PCGS and NGC combined have certified, to date, only 13 MS-65 and finer 1807 Bust left examples," the cataloger wrote.

A phone bidder got the 1896-O Morgan in NGC MS-65, again from the Reinstein collection, for $100,625.

$100,625 was also top bid for a 1915-S Panama-Pacific $50 ocatagonal slug, graded NGC MS-65.

A 1912 $20 in NGC Proof-67 led Saint-Gaudens double eagle results, coming in at $83,375. Only 74 proofs were released that year.

Final lot to be covered here is a 1793 Chain large cent graded PCGS AU-53. Despite being the most common Chain cent variety, with 400-500 Sheldon-3 pieces known according to the cataloger, and exhibiting planchet flaws nearly throughout, this piece from the first year of cent production sold for $69,000.
