I was chatting with the teller at a branch last night while my coins were counting. I asked if she had any halves and she told me no, and in fact, she was amazed at how many people have been asking lately. She said about a month ago, people started asking all the time. She said that at least one person comes in to ask about and/or order half dollars almost every day. They are ordering in multiple boxes a week for people. I know that this is true at another branch because I tend to get the box scraps (they dont take home the whole box). This new information combined with my recent conflict with the credit union over halves, I think I'm going to switch to dimes and nickels!

Might not be a bad idea. Especially after reading about your first dime find.

A few years ago some of those "get rich quick" scam artists published books informing people how to go to the bank for "free silver". I brought up the issue of roll hunting with one of my non-collector friends, and he told me that he used to go to the bank and demand that the tellers give him "all the silver" coins, as per the advice of the book.

I hit some beginner's luck with my first box--3 90% and about a dozen 40%. Since then, the only silver half dollars I've found were from the teller's tray. I'd blame the books/advice blogs for creating a surge of searchers with no respect for the hobby. Some of them even deface coins that have collector value, but aren't silver.

I remember seeing a video on Youtube (it's probably still there) about one of these get-rich-quick guys where he was basically showing people "how to get free silver from your bank." All you had to do was go in and tell them to give you all their pre-1965 half dollars.

Yeah, as though we have them just hanging out in a drawer somewhere.

Now why didn't I think of that?!

I don't get it. I've been a roll hunter for over 35 years, I picked up the pace back around 2008. Yes, good finds could be made, but now in 2014, it's takes quite a bit of effort to find silver halves. I just don't see the point, unless it's for a love of the hobby. I find hundreds of silver, but I just about break even on costs. For me, it's truly love of the hobby, anything else and I'm fooling myself.

Well, to be fair, I suppose I would be part of this new influx of hunters. However, as much as I like the idea of silver, the melt value of precious medal is a secondary motive. I like old things. The idea of old coins fascinate me. The journey it takes from mint to me is amazing to think about. The hunt of finding one of these gems in the wild is the best part! Unfortunately, mega silver searchers tend to be ruining it for guys like me.
