I was lucky enough to examine a 1960 PL set lately.
The penny had full heavy cameo in both the fields and on the relief and legends on both the obverse and reverse.
The coins were in one of those hard plastic cases and were all PL-65 or above.
I have never seen a cent like that before. Cameo on Cameo Red.
Any thoughts?

I do not have any pictures of it because I did not buy it.
$45 may have been a very low price.
It sure looked original and not painted.

Cameo means a difference in finishes such that the portions in relief stand out against the background, for coins this usually means a frosted relief against a brilliant background. I think what you are describing is a fully frosted or matte coin. Too bad you could not have posted pics.

I had no idea that matte finish was available in the 60's.
Would it command a premium above the regular sets?
The dealer will still likely have it.

I do not have the 1960 PL set so maybe I can't go wrong by picking it up next month. I was just a little leery that it was in a hard made up slab instead of the original cardboard.
Thanks DBM for your help, it's always appreciated.

If you soak Matte finish 1960's PL cents in acetone, they turn out to be regular PL cents. It's hard to tell if a cent is truly a cameo coin underneath the degraded lacquer.
