Hello All,

Hoping a Civil War token guru may be able to help me out here; my knowledge is almost null about CWTs.

Wondering what someone in-the-know may think of:

-The grade of this token?
-Also curious about its number on the rarity scale?
-Does 'double die' apply to tokens (as they were privately minted); if so does it increase the value any?
-Rotation. This token has a medal axis. Is that the correct axis?
-Lastly, what would be the overall value (range)of this token?

I'd be sincerely appreciative of any insight.

Thanks!

IMHO, the grade on your token is XF+. It appears to be this variety:

Personally, I don't see this ebay item readily selling at the price sought. IMHO, it's more of a $25 token in the current market.

I've seen many tokens from this merchant over the years, leading me to believe that Gies is a quite obtainable merchant in the series. Oftentimes, his tokens are found with an "F. GIES" counterstamp, believed to be a post-war alteration; this, perhaps to accentuate the advertising aspect and lessen the token's likeness to a cent.

Die rotation, doubling and other minor errors as a whole are very common in the CWT series. While there is an alluring curiosity factor to such pieces, and sellers often tout them as rarities, these errors typically don't carry a premium value among knowing collectors. Indeed, there are certain dies for which some collectors would pay a premium if a commonly seen error was lacking, and the strike was closer to perfection.

Happy to be of assistance, cdnmace. The new CWT book, ala Bowers and Whitman for about $20 is well worth the investment. You might want to consider buying a copy. Also, the Civil War Token Society is a great way to learn about the series.

Your token is a R-4, meaning that 200-499 are estimated to exist. This is subject to change when The Civil War Token Society publishes it's Third Edition of the Fuld Store Card guide.
