Hi all,
Just looking for some help identifying this round I just bought.. No searches bring up this exact type.
Looks to have been tested, as seen in the picture.
Any thoughts?

The design is actually that of a Draped Bust.

I like that round, and I could swear I've seen those before.

I did an fee-pay search and didn't realize real $1 flowing hairs were so expensive!
Confident someone on here will chime in with the ID.

OK, Searching Draped Bust brings up some more details.. all I see is 'private mint', and most of those are dated..
Is my assumption that the worn area in the forst photo is a silver test?
What would that do to the value/sellability of this?
I find the toning interesting, I actually prefer tohe look of it it to a new round.

If it is just a Generic 1oz round/coin IMO its only worth is the silver content.
You could possibly add value if you pinned down the mint.

What he said. Unless it has a dollar symbol attached to the "coin", it's just a generic round with little value beyond spot.

Yep, thanks.. I was just unsure if the smudge/damage part would affect the sellability.. I assume the apparent rarity would not make it too much more valuable.
Would sure like to know the mint/date at least......

Eighties or nineties. Oddly, to me, at least, the info in my inventory claims it may have been made by the US Mint as part of a 12-medal series called "Legendary coins". I actually had to check the site because I didn't remember the US mint making medals, but indeed they do, as I confirmed below. I packed away both the medals and the COAs years ago, so I'm relying on the info from my inventory data. All the medals in my set had the word "copy" in or near the area that has the weird smudge on your round.

If I'm correct about the damage on your medal and not just misinterpreting what I'm seeing from your pic, it was done intentionally to dupe someone into believing the medal was the real McCoy. It certainly has the look of one, if a buyer simply did a cursory inspection of the "coin" and missed the lack of a date, the big giveaway.

As far as the date goes, most COAs don't list dates for coins (obviously) or medals (it would be helpful), so I made my best guess on the date by the style, presentation, and professionalism of the literature that came with it. The lit. in my set pretty much ruled out that the medals were from the 60's or 70's. The whole package was simply more polished than most of the COAs from 50 or 60 years ago. It just didn't have that worn-out look of literate included with the coins and medals from back then. The fonts and stock paper from the earlier periods I mentioned are a dead giveaway, IMO.

There is another distinct possibility. The medal was a copy of the original and made by any number of private mints from the 1980's or 1990's, or even produced by an amateur artisan. If that's the case, it will be much harder, if not impossible, for you to establish provenance. Far more effort than a medal that only sells on ebay for a little over spot is worth.

Hope that helped.

Lol, I think I got some of those and a few similar to those for like $1 over spot as a "various rounds" product recently. Are you guys saying they are worth something?
