So I've searched almost $500 in quarters this week.

My goal has been 3 fold. 1-Upgrades for my circulated State Quarter Set, of which I was able to upgrade about 10-15 in the set that I have going. 2 - My son's album. For this, I pull a bunch of the ones I know he needs...put them in the change jar and then let him look through it as if he finding surprises...I just love seeing him find one that he needs. and lastly...silver...this is really a tertiary purpose...if I find it great if not...its not my real purpose for doing it.

I digress....here's the real question.

In my search I've kept a critical eye out for State Quarters that grab my attention due to condition. If not needed as an upgrade, then I put it in a flip and keep it. Out of all the quarters searched this week I've pulled 8. My criteria is that they have to almost give me the heart flutter that I get when I see silver...has to be a really nice coin.

The ones I've kept, to me, would pass as low UNCs...the only real tell tail is that the reeded edge isn't as sharp as the UNC states that I've purchased before.

Does anyone else do this...what do you do with them...just keep them for the future? Just wondering.

I don't see the harm in keeping BU quarters... they might increase slightly in value but they'll never be worth less than 25 cents. I have a few sets of AU/BU quarters set aside for my kids and maybe grandkids.

I just ran across almost a roll of 2004-2005 westward journey nickels in au/bu shape, always nice to hold onto a those.

I am not really into grading of coins myself, but with quarters I pull out some of the stinkers. the ugliest looking coins and dirtiest I find and am going to paint the states and parks designs on them when I get around to it. actually havent put a single park into its folder yet, so might need to do that first before I go painting any I might only have one of.

my criteria is details look good, not too many scratches, and just too ugly to be anything other than "oh that is what that deign looked like" so when I paint it, it isn't really losing value but maybe gaining a reason to live on.

Shady that's an interesting approach. How do you paint them...do you have any pics of our work?

So far I have only painted a SAC and Sheild for my mother. the shield penny was ugly to begin with and turned out ugly afterwards too. did the whole red and white stripe with a blue field and white stars. don't remember the background color, but did Lincoln in a shadow/silhouette on a white background.

working on a keelboat jefferson now as the pirate ship from an anime called One Piece. it is taking lots to redo it.

the SAC I painted only the front with her and her papoose in proper colors. my mother has probably lost them in an old pocketbook by now.

i will be using LOTS of magnifying glasses and acrylic paints to finish and seal them with a clear varnish and stick the states in a State Quarter folder.

when I get more time to do them I will post some pic on here of my terrible paint work.

oh and bicentennial quarter and half I am painting red white and blue lettering, independence hall will be to its original colors. might silhouette kennedy on the front as well. the colonial drummer will be in colonial colors.

it isn't really for art so much as the coins are jut in bad shape and cleaning couldnt make em worse for wear so painting them gives me something to waste time on when I have it to waste.

also want to do a fleet of keelboats as pirate flagged ships with real pirates like Francis Drake, and otehr if I can find their flags.

Merry or Thousand Sunny? Either way, I for one would love to see the final piece!

I got my painting area crowded with all sort of coins to sort that need sorting and the painting supplies put up. I will get back to it soon and post some pics. I am thinking Ussop's Merry since Franky just destroyed it last weekend, then will go with the Thousand maybe later. Just getting the Straw Hat icon right is a PITA when I last tried, probably because it wasn't airing at that time. Where should I stick these pics, Which forum around here, since I can host them on another website and just post them in the thread with BBCode when I have them?

Yea pics...gotta see this...if I tried this it would end up as a one color round disk that may look like it was a coin at in time.
