It seems this subforum was very slow to almost dead for the most part until the Baseball HOF commemoratives came out.

There has been a discussion of how it appeals to more than just numismatists with the theme of baseball reaches all ages etc.

However the State Quarter series also introduced a lot of people into coin collecting or at accumulating because everyone lived in at least one state and the series had at least a small appeal to everyone in the country.

However 15 years after the series started and 6 years after it ended those sets and accumulations are now being dumped but the sealed rolls at banks and back into circulation.

With all of the speculation of big dealers hoarding and buying up the majority of the mintage to resell at a high premium will this series be another bust now (due to high markup for the average person to get one) or fade off in the not too distant future due to potential high financial loss due to the high initial prices like the MS70 2000 Sac dollars when they came out?

They really arent comparable from a value standpoint. State Quarters have mintages in the 100s of millions and the billions. You can go to the bank and sort quarters all day for free to get all the State Quarters you want. You cant do that with these and the mintage is 400k not 800 million.

Yes both generated buzz, but one is a readily available cheap acquisition and the other is a limited mintage of significantly more value that can only be acquired through a purchase. You dont have to compete with banks where they can be had at face value for these which has been the fatal flaw of modern circulating collecting value wise except for the top grade.

I think these will have some good value in the future. Its the mints first domed shape coin, thinking about getting 7 sets of the dollars ms70 and pr70. Does anybody else think this will be a good investment?

Personally, I can think of hundreds, if not thousands of better ways to INVEST $3,000+. That isn't a comment on the future value of this issue but a general statement about the idea of INVESTING in coins. The best way to make money on this one though passed with initial sale from the mint. The pop happened and now you are playing a waiting game for another potential price climb in the future. When will it happen and how much it will go up (or down) is anyone's guess.

Personally, I would not "buy in" at this point in the cycle on the Baseball HOF coins. I do not believe the current market prices of these coins will be maintained. The silver and gold will likely always carry a premium, but I believe it will be less of a premium than is being seen at the moment.

Just MHO, of course! Your mileage may vary.

As mentioned with most of these highly sought after coins there is a cycle of pricing... initially it zooms up as lots of people chase the extraordinary gains in selling on the way up. Then it settles (either slowly or rapidly) to a more reasonable point. Sometimes that point is far above issue price, sometimes lower (Brown Box Ikes anyone?)

After that period, it will follow a more normal price/value curve. The unknown is whether - after the initial hype fades - Johnny non-collector will be interested in buying this 'cool baseball thing' on ebay or not.

So - my 2c - if you didn't get in initially, I can't see buying in until the price stabilizes.

A search like this: http://www.ebay.com/sch/Coins-US-/2...n%22&_sop=13
will show where we are on the curve... you might also want to search for a specific grade, e.g.:

Baseball HOF gold -"no coin" ("pf-70", pf70, "pf 70")
