I was reading on a major Bullion mint's Website that their bars are packaged in PVC casings. Now I'm not a Bullion storage Expert but Isn't PVC one of the Worst things to store Coins/Bullion in? Come to think of it a lot of the plastic casings silver bars are sealed in seem very soft and pliable, Perhaps made of PVC. What is your Opinion on this?

A quote from one of the info sites
"PVC damage on coins is the result of improperly storing coins in soft plastic flips. The PVC chemical in the flips interacts with the metal of the coin, creating a slightly acidic reaction, which causes residual deposits to appear on the coin's surface. Copper coins are most vulnerable to PVC damage, followed by silver, and then gold and platinum."
So no, not a good idea

I reacal that PVC only becomes a problem after a lengthened period of time in storage. So.... I guess it depends on how long the silver was in them for.
Many dealers use (or used to use) PVC flips because they are cheap. You are expected to remove the coin from the flips once you receive them. As for silver, not sure how you would need to proceed.

Air-tite is the way to go, IMO. I buy in bulk (250), so my cost is .40 each. Other than the dreaded milk-spot, I can't remember too many, if any, coins tarnishing in those containers.

Quick question here... I have some 10 oz. stackers, and sheets of 1 oz. bars all in original plastic packaging (none have been opened). Should I remove them form the sheets and store them in another way ?

Dale,
I wouldn't; unless you have equivalently-shaped Air-tite cases to transfer the PMs into.

Traevin,
Thanks for the insight. No I do not have any air-tite cases, Currently they are all just in original packaging and stored in the safe.

For bars and rounds I'm sure the wrapping they come in is ok, not for coins though.

Question: I have 1 oz bars in the original packaging. Is it better to leave it there or store it in tube ? Wouldn't be easier to sell in the original packaging instead of tube down the road ? Thanks.

I am a PVC formulator by trade.
I have no idea what this plastic is, but there is little reason, outside of cost, to use PVC.
I tend to doubt that it is PVC.
To check it is pretty simple.
If the plastic is put in water it will sink.
If the plastic is burned you will get a green tint to the flame and smell hydrochloric acid.
If it does both, it is PVC.
