I got a scratched-up 1997 toonie in my change! This is the first time I saw a normal toonie that is not from 1996 or having the new design since I started actually looking at my change more closely. Which is... half a year ago at most. They're not very common aren't they. But I don't get a lot of toonies either. Edit: I forgot, other than a 2002 one I received shortly before too. But this is really the first one minted before 2000 that isn't a 1996. Edited by Altaira 04/21/2014 10:31 pm

I just came to Canada last June and I've almost always been using debit card for paying until around last month (unless I really need to use cash), until I actually got serious about collecting, so I've handled a minimal amount of cash and change until then. Half a year ago is when I started trading and keeping just the coins I like but that was mostly from helping others count, sort and roll their small change which are some quarters and others are smaller denominations (mostly commemoratives found in my school office since they don't have time to do it by themselves, but back then I didn't realise the value of coins beyond face).

there is a lot to be collected from pocket change.....yu will hav to adopt good ways...I received good change from tim's, KFC, But the time of year is important to get shiny (MS65) change...Yu really only need one of each denom and variety....I hav to slow down at about 4 examples of each...If yu search rolls then can go back up to say 10 years ago with a shiny example of coins..

I'm trying to get one of each variety for the steel coins and keep all that are nickel. What time of year is best to get shiny coins?

Spring time is when the RCM usually rolls out new coinage.

The mintage of the 1996 is super high compared to the other years.

I'm looking at rolls too and picking out the nicest coin from every year. persistnt, is any shiny coin in mint state even though it's been circulated quite a bit? From the mintages, small wonder why I keep getting either 1996, 2012, or 2013. Also I'm sure the old style coins are getting rarer because the mint is melting them down for nickel.

The qualities of a MS coin: No fingerprints No major Post-Mint Damage ( PMD) Change of colour (toning) is allowed. Therefore, if something's been in circulation but still has no trace of circulation (the above characteristics), it's MS, in my opinion.

Yes, the 1998 and each type of 2003 are somewhat tough, especially in higher grades!

I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for those really low mintage years. Unlikely to find a high grade one in my change, but I'll do what I've always been doing, which is replacing the one currently in my collection with a higher grade one if I do find it. Then I spend that low grade.
