Hi all, I am new to the forum so would like to introduce myself.
my name is Andy and I live near hull, I am 29. I work as a delivery driver for a takeaway shop and handle around £4k -£5k a week in delivery money and till money so you can see I handle a few coins in a week

I was wondering what coins are worth collecting which are in circulation now? My fascination came at collecting the olympic 50ps at which I have now 7 full sets (circulated coins).
I also have from looking on ebay 3xrio coins and 5xBeijing coins and 2xkew 50ps.
I know from looking on ebay that these are worth a few quid more then the coin is worth so I know there quite collectable.

Is there any more coins out there that are worth looking out for, or any links to sites that show coins?

Thanks for reading my long post and welcome any replies and feedback, thanks Andy

to the Forum!

Not much of a UK Coin collector so I'll leave this one to oour UK members but generally, any silver is worth keeping and pre-1948 dates of GB coins are silver. Naturally anything older than 1950 is worth having a look at, since you get it for face, if you don't want it you can always cash it in.

Hi

Lucky you coming into contact with that many coins regularly

The coins to look out for are :

Kew Gardens 50p ,

2002 Commonwealth games 2 pound coins -especially the one with the Northern Ireland flag,

The Mary Rose 2 pound coin,

King james Bible 2 pound coin

London to Rio 2 pound coin

London 1908 centenary commemorative 2 pounds coin

Give Women the Vote 50p

Jersey 2 pound coin

Isle of Man 2 pound coins

Any coins from the Falkland islands , St Helena & Ascension & Gibraltar

Other interesting coins to look out for are those which are almost impossible to get like 1972 penny and 2p - no one here has reported ever finding one in circulation so those 2 will be very challenging but I figure since you handle lots of coins you would be the best person to most likely find them

You forgot the horse Olympic 50p too. Hehe.

If you want to collect circulating coins, they just try and get them all. There are sides like http://en.numista.com/catalogue/ind...t=&dg=&w=&g= which can give you a list of all the coins, also books in Waterstones and other places that can give you information of all the coins.

The Kew Gardens coin went nuts because The Royal Mint did a promotional type thing on it with people paying silly money for a coin that isn't as rare as those who think it's rare think it is (if that makes sense).

Also, some of the older coins like the Commonwealth Games coins from 2002 aren't that easy to get, though I found a few when working in a shop for a few months.

There are a few that are impossibly rare, like the 1998 and 1999 1 pound coins, which were never in circulation. But yeah, there's not much in the way to collect other than £2 and 50ps and the coins from places like the Isle of Man and Gibraltar etc.

Also London Underground £2 - I grabbed some shortly after they came out then saw no more, seems a buoyant market on ebay and they could go up further. One would expect the chuffa-chuff buffs to share a liking here.

Manx/Channel Is./Gibraltar/S. Atlantic coinage is fun to collect though not all are 'worth' above face value e.g. I have seen Gibraltar skull reverse only fetch p+p over face value on ebay. Then again certain other bikers (if that's what you do) might prize them!

There's been some discussion of fake £1 and £2 in other threads. Some have fetched around £10 on ebay with sellers warned they were/probably fake. It is illegal knowingly to pass on or keep fakes without lawful excuse so this is a risqué area. Will current fake £1s become a legitimate commodity when the mono-metallic £1 ceases to be legal tender in 2017 or soon after?

Let's say it can be fun to make one's own assessment of which types would then be worth something, and which would not!

Proof coins can also turn up in circulation, I believe there is a special term for these.

Rotographic do an up-to-date 'Check Your Change' series which is helpful (Newest edition is on ebay : item no 141245963572)
although the prices aren't particularly accurate compared to ebay etc (Which admittedly is very unpredictable)
it's a good reference and includes info on the 'super-rares' like the 1983 New (Two) Pence and more recently the WWII commemorative £2 with the Guy Fawkes edge
(Although it doesn't mention the Guy Fawkes £2 with the standard 'Giants' edge however)

how do people usually tell if a circulating coin was
originally proof? surely it would have lost some of it's
shine/degraded a little?

Hi
The Kew gardens is the one to keep looking for .
Also the undated 20p (still goes for £40)
Don't waste your time looking for silver, unlike in America there's isn't much, if any silver coins in circulation in the Uk.

Very good point about the undated 20p having said that I have sorted through a lot of 20 pence pieces and so far ......

Has anyone found an undated 20p in circulation recently ?
