Hi. Can anybody explain what's going on near the 5 and in front of the beaver's face? Looks like some die cracks. Anything else? Thanks.

Rust forming beneath the plating.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

So...does this trump the die cracks? Does this invalidate the coin and reduce it to a nickel? Thanks DBM.

Moisture or something has migrated under the chrome plating. Not die cracks IMO.

You can get spectacular effects in the 1944-45 nickels as well, where the same effect is there but to a much greater degree. It almost looks like a spiderweb running all over the coin. The plated nickels were prone to this damage if exposed to inclement conditions. Kind of cool, really.

You're right pennysaver. It looks like a web or veins. So, am I right to assume there is no value beyond face? Thanks.

Maybe not a lot, but it looks in your photo that it's around "Cents" and "Canada" as well, so it has some desirability. I'd keep it because it has a neat look to it.
