A friend brought out this coin for me to look at. I collect US coins, mostly modern varieties. Does anyone know what this might be?

It's a coin of Roman emperor Probus, with Mars reverse.

I'll look for the full attribution in a bit.

IMP C PROBVS PF AVG - Emperor Probus, the Pious and Fortunate Augustus.

MARS VICTOR - Victorious Mars (a god of War).

Heres a proper ID for you:

Probus AE Antoninianus. Lugdunum Mint.

Obv:- IMP C PROBVS P F AVG, Radiate and cuirassed bust r.

Rev:- MARS VICTOR, Mars walking right, holding spear and trophy; III in ex.

Emission 4 Officina 3. Minted from Middle to End 277 A.D.

References . RIC 38 Bust Type F (Common). Cohen 334. Bastien 194

I'm not the best with attributing late Roman bronzes, but it looks like:

Probus AE Antoninianus. Lugdunum Mint.
Emission 4 Officina 3. Minted from Middle to End 277 A.D.
Obv: IMP C PROBVS P F AVG, Radiate and cuirassed bust r.
Rev:MARS VICTOR, Mars walking right, holding spear and trophy; III in ex.
Emission 4 Officina 3. Minted from Middle to End 277 A.D.
References: RIC 38 Bust Type F (Common). Cohen 334. Bastien 194

I'm sure Ben or someone can confirm or correct.

A picture out of the reflective 2x2 might help, although there seems to be enough elements visible to make the call.
