Just something I thought of when I read in another forum that somebody found a $500 in circulation from a bank...

How often are old or high denomination bills faked? I know that there is a very good chance that any cashier or bank teller would refuse to accept even a genuine note that is 70+ years old or over $100 face value, but it seems reasonable that a fake gold cert or FRN could be passed off at face value because:

1. These bills have no watermarks or security strips
2. Counterfeit pens won't work, even on genuine bills
3. Anyone less than an expert in the series probably couldn't tell the difference between a genuine bill and a high quality fake

Still, I searched around online and have yet to see or hear of a single fake large denomination bill. Have any of you encountered any?

I don't know how often or likely they are to be counterfeited.

I will say that I had a friend that was a teller at a local bank and a customer deposited one for face value. She bought it from her cash drawer at the end of the day.

Even old money has that distinctive feel that wouldn't be found on normal paper.

My guess is this would not be economical to design and produce for the limited number of times you could pass these around. Since they are automatically worth over face value, very few will deposit these bills (so an average person would assume, just like the $2, even though a misconception) so an attempt to do so will attract a ton of attention at banks. Even if you got away with this once you'd start making a name for yourself going to other banks or going to another bank more than once. It would be more worthwhile cranking out a design of the older 100 and passing off 5 of those than 1 of the 500. Far fewer people will question them as well.
