Do any of you use a lighted magnifying glass? If so, are there any you recommend or not recommend? The eye strain of looking with one eye through a loupe or small hand held magnifying glass is starting to take its toll. I thought something bigger, that requires less squinting, might help when searching for errors/varieties.

I know what you mean. Not sure if you are doing this, but try not closing the other eye when using the loupe - it seems to keep my eyes better adjusted and it feels less taxing.

I've been contemplating an inexpensive microscope or stereoscope. I can access the one at work, so I mainly sort my varieties out and take them with me. But the reality is that I'm only delaying the inevitable. Check out your local ebay listings/craigslist. May be something inexpensive to be had.

Good luck!!

I have one. Don't use it anymore. Lots of bright but not enough X for details.

Lighted-Magnifying-Glass

Works great for me, unfinished basement so I just hang it from the ceiling, not portable but works for dates at least and cuts down on the time I have to use the loupe.

Mine is like ASLAN's. I use it when sorting, it helps with the dates.

I don't have the best vision so I have to use a lighted magnifying glass when looking at coins. I really like the Carson Optical FreeHand Lighted Magnifier with a built-in 5x Spot Magnifier. I own three of them now, placed throughout my house. I use the 5x spot magnifier when CRH. I got mine at Hobby Lobby but it is available through Amazon, just search for the name "Carson Optical FreeHand Lighted Magnifier with a built-in 5x Spot Magnifier". Being new to the forum I wasn't sure if I could post a direct link to the product.

Hope that helps you out.

Rather than closing the eye not being used, keep it open but ignore that image.
Cover that eye if needed. BUT DO NOT CLOSE!
This reduces eye strain.
For a quick look at a coin I use a Bausch and Lomb 5X unlighted.
Many dealers at coin shows have and use one.
For detailed work I have a 30X lighted, but I rarely use it unless necessary.
Between the two lie many choices.
Choose whatever is kindest on your eyes.

For a portable unit, I have and like and use this one: Lighted Magnifier, 3.2x magnification, 6 white LED, product LU190LED from Lighthouse USA (Leuchtturm is the brand name and the owner of Lighthouse).

6 LEDs fairly even light, enough mag but not crazy power
