Been a long time since I shared it (when I got it), and with all the newer people here I'd thought it'd be fun to show it off again. The coin is Byzantine (Eastern Roman) tremissis (one-third of a solidus) and depicts the Emperor Anastasius, who ruled from 491 to 518 AD. Officially, the era in which it was struck is the Early Middle Ages, so I count this coin and others struck at this time as "medieval", although style is late-Roman derived. As with the societal transition from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages, there was no sudden and drastic change in coinage styles with the change in era; it all changed gradually. Anastasius plays into Byzantine coinage history due to a coinage reform that he implemented in 498. This reform introduced new denominations of bronze coinage to supplement the tiny, almost worthless bronze nummi coins in circulation, which were easily lost and only were useful in large amounts. Anastasius I, Byzantine Empire AV Tremissis Obv: DN ANASTA-SIVS PP AVG, pearl-diademed, draped bust right Rev: VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM, Victory advancing right with head left, holding wreath and cross on globe Mint: Constantinople, Mintmark: CONOB (in exergue) Ref: SB 8 Width: 16 mm, Weight: 1.5 grams .jpg)

Ive been considering buying a nice gold coin like this. But they are reeally pricey, and I found that id rather have a big pile of coppers. Plus, id be really worried about getting a forgery. I ought to familiarise myself with them some day.

I admit, it was a bit of a plunge buying it (me having no experience with gold), but it was from my most trusted dealer, who's dealt with coins for years, and he let me pay it off in separate amounts. It looks good to me in hand and the slight bit of dirt on the reverse is a good sign IMO.

I'm more partial to large ancient silver coins, but one of these days I really want to get at least one gold coin. Very nice coin.

I have NO experience with any gold coins But, The one you show here is a beautiful coin in my eye's.
Some day I would like to get something like that. A pipe dream perhaps but...
The history it holds in it's self is worth more then the price of gold in my opinion.
Wonderful coin!

I inherited a british gold full sovereign and a half sovereign 1904 and 1914. Nothing ancient. If ever I take the plunge, it won't be from ebay. That is a truly fabulous coin VK.
