Hello CCF,

Over time I have made two different orders of JM silver 1 oz bars from two different reputable sellers but have noticed large differences between them.

Different-Fonts-In-Jm-Bars

The one on the left has very pronounced horizontal lines at the bottom of MATTHEY and the MA are pretty much touching, while the right bar does not. The serial number looks much more cartoony in the right one and is bolder. Lastly, the one on the left has horizontal lines on all the heightened parts.

I have a bad feeling that the right one is fake, but am hoping that perhaps JM produces the different bars simultaneously with slightly different machinery.

Thanks for any help.

To me they both look the same in the pictures, Have you weighed them and checked with a magnet?

Most of the modern fakes will pass the magnet test but all but the very good ones fail on the weight.

If you dont have anything to test them with, take them you your LCS and ask him to test them, if you have no LCS go to one of these "we buy gold" places and ask for a price on them, they will test them. No need to sell

They both look good(real) to me. I would say since the serial numbers are almost 200,000 apart from each other the dies might have been touched up a bit during the striking/pressing. Both these bars are from the newer A and B series JM bars that were contract minted by the Sunshine Mint. If you had the older vintage JM bars I would be able to help you a little more with information. However I know for sure most fake and/or silver plated Johnson Matthey bars that are floating around do not have a serial number.
