I was born in '73. I decided to put together a set of MS coins from that year to put in a plastic 6 hole holder. The dollar coin was a 1973-S 40% silver Ike. I read somewhere that this was the least common of all the Eisenhower dollars. Is this true? When I bought it, it was because I wanted a silver Ike, not for its rarity.

It is the rarest Ike made from what I have heard.

I think the the silver Ikes that year are no less common than the other silver Ike years. What is more of a rarity are the 1973 P&D clad Ikes, since they were not issued for circulation that year. They were only issued in the mint sets.
Although I have pulled a 1973, 1973D, and 1973S proof (clad) from circulation within the last year.

Not counting minor varieties, the 1973-S 40% silver proof is the key date. In other words, to fill a Dansco album, it is. The 1973 and 1973-D clad have a slightly lower released mintage than the 1973-S 40% silver uncirculated. http://www.coincommunity.com/us_dol...senhower.asp

Didn't the mint melt down a bunch of 1973 clad Ikes? I think I read about it in the Red Book but it didn't give any numbers except for total mintage.

I believe the mint melts down any unsold collector coins at the end of the year.

If you visit the link, it gives total released (sold) and total minted (in the footnote). http://www.coincommunity.com/us_dol...senhower.asp2,000,000 each (P&D) were minted, 1,769,258 sets were sold, so 230,742 each (P&D) were destroyed.

JBuck is correct about the 1973S Proof in silver-clad is the key date for Ike's. Just over one million were minted, while the 1973 silver BU has a mintage of 1.9 million coins.
The clad P & D BU Ike's were only available in Mint Sets and not released for circulation.

I like the year 1973 for ikes. 1973 P is the second best one for which I like. The silver is much better, but when it's a proof not so much.
One of our members sells raw ikes and he might have one for you. It would be like five dollars for it because when you want a BU one, they aren't easy to find unless a later year. You can PM if interested and I'll give you his email.

Not to mention that they are condition rarities. PF 69 DCAMs are not so easy to come by.
