This 1867 Shield nickel is my oldest find. Looks like it may have been circulating for most of it's life.

CONGRATS!

Wowie, what a find! You really can't get a nickel much older than that, because they made the first ones in 1866.

Most of us are lucky to get a few buffs roll hunting, and we all dream of finding V nickels, but it usually never happens. But a Shield nickel!! Yahooooooo!

Keep the amazing finds coming!

Very nice. I agree with the others. I've found a few V nickels, but still dreaming about the Shield.

Yooper, That is the oldest coin I found as well. Mine looks a little more worn then yours. I was shocked when I found it.

My son and I have found 120 Buffalo nickels, only 4 V nickels, and no Shield nickels.

Did you think: "What in the heck is this?" (looking unfamiliar...as it should). Followed by: "OH MY!"

I imagine that folks over the years glanced at it and thought "foreign" and moved on in their busy minds/lives. Glad you had lightning strike!

Nice! You may have found one that I released to the wild. Each year I let go Indian cents, buffalos, V's, and other old coins that I have no use for. Many I have dug. For hopes that it will spawn a new collector.

Nice touch Fistfull _ I've been releasing worn Buffalo nickels with the same idea in mind. An interesting specimen to someone else and the chance to create a new collector.

Although, that Shield nickel is definitely not a coin that I'd let leave my collection.
