Hi guys...I see lots and lots of people coming on the forum wondering if their coin is stamped on a wrong planchet..And not everyone is fortunate enough to have access to a XFR machine like SPP does...Soooooo..Here is a tool that you can use to see if it is MAYBE worth while investigating further...OK..I down loaded this app called METAL DETECTOR from the Sony play store to my ANDROID cell phone...Below are known values for 5...10...25...loonie and toonie...If your coin has another reading, then just maybe it is a wrong planchet...I know it sounds Mickey Mouse, but worth a try. 5 cents.....33uT 10 cents....19uT 25 cents....37uT loonie......42uT Toonie......49uTOTHER EXAMPLES ARE STOVE TOP......22uT SINK...........111uT RAILING........181uT Edited by wert 05/12/2014 12:28 pm

Try repeating your tests in different places in your house...

SPP...Took a Loonie to different rooms...
Bathroom..........43uT (micro testla) living room.......42uT (micro testla) Dining room.......41uT (micro testla) Hallway entrance..41uT (micro testla)
The only reason I think the bath room is not as accurate is because of the magnetic field given out by the metal in the tub...Look SPP it clearly not as accurate as your XFR machine..It is just a tool that can be used by collectors to indicate MAYBE they should search further..That's all.

Modern plated steel Canadian coins have a unique electromagnetic signature for each denomination, app should work reasonably well to discern these. Have you tried using it for older nickel or cupro-nickel coins?

Not yet DBM...just tried it on a couple of coins and I know what you mean about the electro magnetic signature of different metals...Didn't go too much further until I posted the initial results...Was worried that my idea might bring more negativity than interest..

Those results look pretty consistent. I was thinking how it would react next to a microwave, a wireless phone base, internet router, etc. Your railing measurement was interesting... Are you using a base metal or plated loonie?
