Sold a coin a while back, it went (auction) for 1.21gbp. You could just make out if you looked very carefully 2 portraits on the front. The buyer has cleaned it, and sent me a few pics....

Mixed feelings on this one. On the one hand, wow, look what was under the crud, on the other, it looks as though it has been stripped back to the metal which is a shame. It would have been better had some of the patina remained.

That's pretty nifty. I have not yet received similar results. Perhaps that's for the best, considering Pishpash' reaction and the fact that I received my coins from pishpash. ;)

Dead right Michael, you be careful!

Seriously, always retain the patina, it does no favours to the coin to strip it back.

In the case of this coin in order to bring out the details it pretty much had to be cleaned liked this. I would also prefer to have some of the patina left.

I am with Pish, on this one. Mixed feelings. Wow great details but the coin has almost completely been depatinized. I suppose it what whatever the owner likes.

yeah, I usually cringe when I see a coin with no patina. I think it was a good move where however, the coin is a poor shape and the patina really obscured the details that were there.

Its too late now for the patina but it should tone up in the future.

This coin has been "zapped". Electrolysis. Only way to get rid of all the gunk on crusted romans. The patina is stripped away, but heck of a lot nicer now, than it was. I've zapped loads of coins, and they usually turn up very nice.
