these 2 gold babies right here..the anticipation is killing me

I know they are gold, from france. I think they are worth $250--$300 each
IF they are graded high...marks on them are from the prongs that held the coins in place. on the earring post
ihave not tried,,but I bet, a jeweler can buff the marks off

This will destroy the value of these coins - although their value is already destroyed by the marks.

Buffing off the gold will mean less weight, less gold, and less value. So don't do it.

Most of the time gold coins found in jewelry are counterfeit. From what I could find online, it looks as if the 1859 was only minted in gold with the BB mint mark, so that one most likely is a fake. The 1866 gold 5 francs were both minted with the A and BB mint mark. Any possible way you could get the weight of them. Anyway, they would both grade as a detail grade because of the mounting on the jewelry. If you have them buffed it will just decrease value even more. I would just leave them as is and get them checked out to see if they are real or not. They are both worth about 60 bucks in gold content alone.

My French Gadoury catalogue lists both 1859A and 1859BB - mintages of 5,659,773 for the A and 2,279,487 for the BB. Weight should be 1.612 g. These coins both appear to have the Laureate bust of Napoleon III, but the 1859 should have a bare head according to the catalogue... Curiouser and curiouser...

I was using NGC world coin catalog and didn't see a 1859A. They list both coins at 1.612 grams also. Only way to tell would be to have them tested. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
