Thoughts on grade and approximate value? Thanks!

Looks High AU or even MS. There isn't much value here I'm afraid. These are very common and often sell for spot even in XF/AU, yours is slightly nicer, I would say maybe silver melt + $2.

The pictures aren't fantastic, but when I look at it in person it is insanely detailed, for instance much of the detail in the face is visible and all the lines in the shield, I payed 10$ for it, which is probably more than it's worth, but it's a beautiful piece, I'm still trying to learn more about foreign coin values so I can make smarter purchases.

You probably overpaid by a few dollars but it is a very nice looking coin. Are there any reputable dealers near you with a good selection of foreign? If so spend some time going through their boxes. That's what I did. It'll give you a good start on figuring out coins and their grades and prices. Of course I buy something every time I spend an hour flipping through the boxes.

I live fairly close to San Francisco, so I could easily go there and find a reputable foreign dealer, right now I just go to a little hole in the wall store that has good prices on US coins and I like the guy who runs it, so I bought this from him, but he has a very small selection of foreign coins, I may venture into San Francisco soon to find more selection and better pricing.

Oh sweet. I've got the perfect place for you then. It's called Witter coins. Address is...
Hobart BLDG. Suite 1409
582 Market Street
San Francisco, CA 94104
The owner is Dean Witter. He told me he has been dealing coins since 1958. He has got to have the most impressive foreign collection that I have seen in person. I only spent about 30 min in there but he was more than happy to pull out anything I asked him for and was also pretty chatty. He's probably got tons of experience he can school you on. Most of the expensive pieces are out on display so you'll have to ask to see the boxes of the cheaper stuff. He's also got a pretty good selection of coins in junk bins. Silver foreign starts at .99, 2.99 and 4.99 I believe. Foreign copper and base metal starts at .99 and up. My suggestion would be to go there talk with him for aa bit and hit those junk bins. Take anything that catches your eye and take it home and look it up. It's located in downtown SF so parking can be quite expensive. I'd suggest parking elsewhere and taking a bus or trolley or if you live near Bart a Bart stop is right around the corner from the building.

Wow thank you so much! I live about 3 blocks from a bart station, and I know my way around San Francisco pretty well! I will definitely check this place out, it sounds great. Tomorrow I'm going back to my main coin store in Berkeley, but next weekend I will probably scrounge up some cash and check this place out, thanks for the recommendation!

No problem. Glad to help. Let me know how it goes. You should check out his literature too. He had a good selection of books. Pretty cheap too. I tthink I saw a couple Krause world coin books for around 20 bucks.

Do you know any good places to buy US coins in San Francisco? I'm a big fan of the shop in Berkeley but the selection is fairly limited, so any other recommendations would appreciated.

Same place. He's got an extensive collection of US coins as well. The only other place I've been to in the city mostly dealt with bullion silver and gold and rare foreign coins which were way out of my price range. The cheapest one was 600 bucks.

Ouch, those prices are too much for me, and besides, I don't find bullion particularly interesting, that's great that he has a lot of US too! I'll be going there next weekend for sure.

Yea same here. Seemed like they focused more on high dollar investments at that other place. They were nice enough to tell me about Witter coins though.
