Lincoln cents, gold, classic type coins and paper money from the Peter Huntoon collection highlight Bowers and Merena Auctions' 1,800-lot Milwaukee Rarities sale set for Aug. 4.

"I think we have really outdone ourselves for this auction," said Steve Deeds, B&M president. "We have an impressive list of collections that includes Dan Close's Lincoln cents, some fresh Peter Huntoon notes, Drinen's Buffalo nickels and the Green River Collection of Morgan dollars."

Centerpiece of the sale is the Dan Close "Close to Perfect" Collection as B&M is calling it, citing that it is the No. 1 All-Time Finest PCGS Registry Set of Lincoln cents with varieties, circulation strikes (1909-present). The entire collection, 242 lots, boasts a PCGS Set Rating of 68.21, the highest rating ever for its category, catalogers said.

"Among my personal favorites in the Dan Close 'Close to Perfect' Collection is the 1917 FS-013 doubled-die obverse, said Deeds. "This is one of the better-preserved examples of this popular mint error, with a PCGS population of just four in MS-66 Red and another two finer."

A former Eliasberg half dollar, an 1836 Capped Bust, Overton 116, graded NGC Proof-67, is another sale highlight.

Gold coins to be offered includes a 1796 Capped Bust $2.50, NGC MS-62; 1803 Capped Bust $10, NGC MS-63; 1854-O Liberty $20, PCGS AU-55; 1875 Liberty $20, NGC Proof-64 Cameo; 1920-S Saint-Gaudens $20, PCGS MS-62; and 1929 Saint-Gaudens $20, NGC MS-65.

Paper money is led by a Territory of Arizona National Bank Note from Clifton, an 1882 $10 Date Back from the First National Bank, charter 5821, graded very fine. One of the popular Tombstone, Ariz., Nationals is also on offer, a $10 1902 Plain Back from the First National Bank, charter 6439, graded fine.

Large-size type notes include a serial No. E100000000A Series 1917 $1 Legal Tender Note, Friedberg 37, graded Choice Crisp Uncirculated-64PQ by Rare Currency Grading Service; and a serial No. 2 Series 1901 $10 Bison Legal Tender Note, Fr. 114, RCGS About CU-55.

A small-size $10,000 Federal Reserve Note from the New York district, Fr. 2231B, is graded Gem Uncirculated-65 by Currency Grading and Authentication.

All lots and images in the B&M Milwaukee Rarities Sale can be viewed and bid upon online at https://www.bowersandmerena.com. Printed catalogs are available, call (800) 458-4646.

The auction will be held at the Four Points by Sheraton Milwaukee Airport, 4747 S. Howell Ave. Milwaukee, Wis.; hotel telephone (414) 481-8000.

The sale will take start at noon on Saturday, Aug. 4, in the Lafayette Ballroom, with the second session beginning at 5 p.m.
