Newbie here, so this is probably a dumb question. Trying to decide which country's and denomination of gold coins to buy. My goal = inflation hedge but still retain some liquidity. To date, I've stayed with various denominations of SoA's Krugerrand.

Your input/advice is welcome. Thanks in advance!

Look into Hungarian and Austrian gold coins. Look at 50 pesos Mexican gold, and finally South African Krugerrands. Everything depends on your location in the world.

Resident citizen of the US, but always considered the SoA Krugerrand the more/most "popular or circulated" gold coin. No particular reason (except personal preferrence), but I'm a bit leary of Pesos and Pandas. Been thinking of some US gold coins but can't seem to make up my mind. For some reason (liquidity perhaps), I prefer small denominations -vs- large. May just go with some 'junk' silver but obviously looking for a "direction or destination" so to speak

Larger coins give you more gold at a lower premium - with gold prices having gone down the argument for having smaller coins isn't as big an issue anymore for liquidity. Just wanted to save you some bucks. The coins I gave as examples are the lower premium coins. US coins are also great. 5 peso and 10 pesos might be up your alley but if you prefer something else it's all gold in the end. Krugs are pretty standard worldwide - you won't have a problem cashing these. What karat/fineness is too low for you?

Libertad - thanks for the feedback. To answer your question, I am/have not been particularly specific as to grade/karat...but do tend to aim somewhere in the middle. Never felt like I was able to spend the $ to obtain the 'highest' grade, nor do I purchase on the 'lower' end of the scale. Age may be a 'driver' there. Again, your input on the subject is most welcome and will be considered. THANKS.

I like the French 20 francs - the 1898-1914 issue with the cockerel has a lovely design and you can pick up specimens in great condition for a little over melt - the 1871-1897 'Genie' issue and the earlier Napoleon II coins are also quite reasonable as gold coins go. Personally I like gold coins with a bit of history!

I found:

To have quite low premium. I estimated it to be 1,1% (?) with a sale now for 14,99 over spot. Since I live in Norway and no one buys Norwegian gold coins it seems...I buy commerative 1/2 oz gold coins for spot + 50 NOK (which is about 8 USD) in premium, and I get the collectors value that comes with it for free.

Gold coins are NOT the preferred item.
Gold bullion is the way to go.
And make sure they are at least .999 pure; refining less pure gold items costs money and therefore yield a lower return.
Krugerrands are only .917 pure.
Gold bars or rounds are the best (it costs extra to make those eye pleasing coins so you'll pay extra to get them).
But if you MUST have coins then the following are .999:
-- American Buffalo $50
-- Australian Nugget/Kangaroo $100
-- Vienna Philharmonic
-- Canadian Maple Leaf $50
