Hey everyone

Just wanting to get a quick opinion on the following coin that has been offered to me which I am interested in. Main points needed are the grade of a coin and anything which may impact the value of the coin (problems etc). Also just wondering but is that line for the eyebrow tooled in post minting? just wondering considering I am relatively new to this.

Thanks everyone

Not sure if my eyes are deceiving me but is the reverse ever so slightly double struck? Regardless it is a beautiful coin in my opinion, easily EF. Hard to tell about the eyebrow line just from the photo but agree its a little odd.

Need to know a little more about it:
Who is selling it, and where it came from (provenance),
weight.
The eyebrow makes me somewhat curious.
Inspect the edge of it very closely with a 10x loupe if you can. Look for tooling, edge joins or evidence of a removed casting sprue.

Style generally looks OK.

If possible, buy it on approval and get another professional opinion. I know of a very respected guy of excellent professional opinion in Sydney. He has been in the coin business dealing with ancients for more than 40 years. He works for I.S. Wright. He is my 'go to' man, and has been a lot describer for auctions for most of those years.

If this coin is real it's one of the nicest examples that I've seen. From what I can see everything looks right, but copies are made so well now a days that sometimes the experts have a difficult time telling the real ones from the fakes. I agree with sel about who is selling it and it's provenance.

It looks really really nice, although I wouldn't drop as much money on that as it must cost unless it was from someone I totally trusted.

It is being sold by Numismatik Lanz so it is quite reputable the weight of it is 17.23g so the weight is right on to no problems have been stated in the description. Jimbo777 you are right on mate it definitely does look like it has been double struck personally I was between that and a die shift. On the eyebrow as well the other tetradrachm they have also from Pella does show evidence of an eyebrow thou not nearly as pronounced.

Also approval is not available but in the terms and conditions it says 'Objections can only be considered within eight days from the receipt of the goods.'

P.s. There is no reference to provenance in the description it self.

Although I have never purchased from Numismatik Lanz they have a good reputation and I would not have any real concerns about authenticity when dealing with them. All in all its a very nice coin and so if the price is right I think you should go for it.

Just noticed that there is a test cut on the head of Zeus very hard to notice but it is there and it would have been almost impossible to notice without really really close inspection.

Doesn't look like a test cut, looks more like a die flaw just like the one by OY.

In my opinion this a GREAT example of an Alexander The Great tetradrachm.

I have personally attend many (over a dozen) Numismatik Lanz auctions over the years in Munich, and Hubert is definitely one of the "good ones" as far as quality and authenticity goes.

I agree it is a nice tetradrachm and still quite interested. I have already put in a strong bid for it tho I can see it going for a bit more than what I have bid. Also you are right jcmworld it is a die flaw I confused it with a test cut sorry. Anyway the newbies can't get it right all the time haha. I also agree with you kroh I have spoken with him and he is a very nice person with a lot of knowledge definetely a good dealer and rates up there for me.
