I'm trying this again. Please excuse the ***. I couldn't find any way that would work yet. I need to practice on the method jbuck suggested.

I've examined the data by mintage. I made no adjustment based for silver nickels. To make the math easier, if a coin had a mintage of 160,738,240 I used 160.7 as the mintage. The weighted average was calculated by multiplying the number of coins of each mintage between 1938 - 1959 ( Jefferson nickels only), summed that calculation then divided by the total number of coins for the period 1938 - 1959. I generally used 100.0 to indicate whether it was a good box or not. The average for years 1 and 2 are 110.59 and 109.35.

Here are my results. I would be interested in any similar results from the rest of you. As it shows, silver is getting more scarce. The distribution across the three mintage bands are remarkably similar across the period.

Value your insights ... alas I do not understand what you are conveying with the data.

I have posted regular updates on my Jefferson roll finds .. hopeful you can perhaps compare your finds against that data.

What I want to be able to do is evaluate each box of nickels against previous boxes to see how they compare to each other as well as over time - are the coins getting harder to find, are the lower mintages drying up, does the distribution change over time as well. Also I was reporting on if silver is becoming rarer as well.

Uh, OK. I'm not seeing what constitutes a "good" box. Am I missing something?

The greater the number of coins I have with the low mintage as a percent of the total 1938 - 59, the lower the weighted average will be. If I have all 57D, 58D and 59D my weighted average will be extremely high. The lower the average indicates I have more lower mint coins than than previous. To me, this constitutes a good box. Granted silver, buffs etc. are not factored in but those rarely happen for me. This is one reason why I calculate the average distribution by the three bands to see if my mix for the mintage is changing over time which, by the way, does not seem to indicate that. The only change I'm seeing is the decrease in silver which may be an anomaly since I got my first silver last night after going through 5 previous boxes without one.

If what I am trying to say doesn't make sense please chime in. My boss is always telling me that I always assume people can read my mind which is usually empty.
