It is always interesting buying a lot from ebay with old prices on them. I just bought this lot of Halves and one of the Walkers was priced at $2 and the 1916-D priced at $4.75. I am curious on why the Columbian Expo half is priced at $35 and $22. Any idea why? I don't really know much about them but Numismedia doesn't list them that high.

Old prices don't mean squat - they may have no modern relevance.

There was a dealer in London who priced coins in faded ink with prices in the £sd format long after decimalisation, for example, the price would be written, £3 14s 3d.

When a potential buyer (usually a tourist) asked how much it was, he would pretend to struggle with the conversion and eventually say "Oh, it's too hard, just give me £3. I met a nice man from Peabody (MA) who was duped by him. His purchases were all about 2 X to 3 X catalogue, yet Mr 'Peabody' was convinced because of the deep discount that he had got a great bargain.

I have bought a lot of Indian heads in old 2X2s with old prices. I know what is there, a 1916-D Walker G with toning where there is a whole in the 2X2. A couple of VF/XF Walkers, a commemorative that I would value at maybe $14., and a commmon walker maybe VG/F I will hang on to till silver goes up. Just wondering if there was a reason for the $35 price on the Columbian Expo.

The only reason for the price on that Columbian was wishful thinking.

One simple answer may be that they were bought at different times and the prices reflected the price at that time. $35 for a circulated Columbian has always been too high but I have seen times of high silver and various promotions that have sold them for that or higher. He probably bought that during a promotion long ago and priced it then. (Like the ad I saw in National Geographic recently from GovMint selling circulated Stone Mountain halves for $70 each.)

Then there is the possibility like Pertinax's Mr Peabody story when they just put a high price on the 2X2 to try and sucker someone into thinking it was something really good and overbidding on the lot.

Yeh, I did a search on ebay on what they go for. I think I saw some at that condition selling at $16 but I have seen them go for less. Those and the Booker T. Washington seem to be the least expensive commemorates on ebay. I just saw the 1916 year and next couple of XF looking coins or close to it. I see those Columbian halves all the time go for around $12-$14. Yes could be GovMint owned by Stauer I think. They are always too high like QVC. It could have been purchased there and the others were just purchased various times. 1916-D is listed at $43 in Good condition but that is the coin that should be listed for $35 not the Columbian.

Saw a similar Columbian sell for $22 today, it had nice gold toning though.
