Could be an annealing process problem with the planchet. Most likely just environmental damage though. If it were an annealing error the color would go all the way through the coin. Only way to tell that is to cut a scratch or gouge in it and look. If the black is just on the surfaces of the coin you can scrape a tiny bit of the edge off and if normal color under it then just damage.
I searched the forum, and it appears most of the "black beauties" are from the 50's. And they are supposed to be more of a dark gray color rather than black. So I guess mine is most likely environmental damage. But I'm keeping it!
