What Caused This Toning? 1941 Threepence

Pulled this out of the $.10 bin at the local coin store just because it caught my eye.

There were two of these, both with this strange black toning. It has the texture of matte black paint (which might be the culprit). It almost looks zinc.

I've never seen a coin tone like this, but I'm far from an expert. What do you think?
