If it lines up with high points on the other side of the coin then it's a die clash. http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...-clash&id=10

Don't think there are high points like that on the other side. Might it have been hit by a reeded coin? A dime looks to be about the right size to make that kind of damage.

Not so fast with the PMD conclusion.
Occasionally broken dies and misaligned dies can cause clashes where you wouldn't expect them.Could be denticle clash. What year is the coin? I think someone posted a similar '62 or '63 here a while back.

1963 is the most common year for this type of error, though 1964 has some too. These marks can appear in various places on the reverse, and most opinions that I have seen on this forum go along with DBM and call it a denticle clash, or a dropped die. The effect can be quite neat when you get a "2-denticle clash" above the date paired with a "hanging 3" clash to get a figure of a small ghost floating above the date.

That's the one! There is also a sub-variety of this one with only one denticle showing. I call it a "cyclops clash" for lack of a better term lol. It's tempting to buy up a number of 1963 rolls and crack them open to see how many varieties of this type of denticle clashing are around...
