Hi all. I recently purchased some mint sealed silver dollars/sets, and I noticed that a few of them have small natural tarnish spots. My best guess is that the localized tarnishing is a result of either trapped moisture during production or a leak/small hole in the sealed wrapper.

My question is, how does this affect the grading of the coin, or would it remain unchanged? Is there any change in value of numismatic coins due to natural spot tarnishing?

From a buyers perspective, would you be less inclined to purchase spot tarnished coins for its numismatic value over melt value?

I definetly think so.,.Less money,.,I have the same question as You, mine is 1965 dollar from mint set (Some other denoms missing).,it has little bits of green on coin not much and lighter in color than Verdigis.,.Would a blast of compressed air help the coin? Or would that ruin it for ICCS to grade it?

Yeah, I'm not sure if compressed air would have any effect on the coin, it might be better to leave it. With tarnish, it would be necessary to clean it to remove it. This would ruin the coin though, and remove any remaining lustre and features etc...

From my research, it seems that tarnished coins (referred to as toning) are not negatively looked upon. However, this might be different for spot tarnishing, which is much less appealing than an even tarnish over the whole coin. Any ideas from anyone else? Grading, value etc?
