G'day, A couple of us at work put in for the Victoria Cross coin ballot, and I was the only one successful. One of the unsuccessful mates looked on ebay and they are selling for $500 plus. My question is do I list it on ebay, and make a quick $500, or hang onto it. I expect the coins to be extremely popular for awhile but to drop off after people lose interest. Some people are listing the coins before they even receive them! Is this normal for a coin to command such high prices so soon after being released? Rastis.

The USUAL prognosis for new mint products is that the after market price is less than the issue price a year so later after issue. As we all know, that is not ALWAYS the case.
If this issue follows the price usual pattern, the advice would be to sell immediately, if you always had a mind to sell.
Way back in 1992, The RAM issued the long box continuous milling Barcelona silver dollar at the Sydney Show for $35 apiece, limit one per customer. 2,500 were minted. I queued for about 1/2 hour, and I bought my single coin. I thought I saw price growth potential in the after market, and decided to get on the end of the queue and buy a second coin.
I am not an investor or re seller, so I kept both for about 20 years, before GIVING both of them away. Market value for these is currently around $200 each, but at the time I gifted them, the catalogue value was around $300 each.
My son was advised to buy the 2000 Victoria Cross $1 coin in the long folder for $30; they had quite a few of them way back in 2002. He had no intention of re selling it, because it became part of his uncirculated dollar type set. He still has it. Market value is now around $300, but that is of little interest to him.

G'day, I'm amazed and disgusted at the price they are selling for at the moment. One sold for $710 this night, what will that person think if the price drops back to the $100 mark in a couple of months.

I hope the buyer at 710 was happily adding it to their collection and not foolishly buying it to resell. To the op I would say if you really wanted it keep it but if you're going to sell someday anyway I'd sayy take the easy money now.

I would sell it if I had one Interest in such items tends to follow a bell shaped curve - up, then flattening, then down till a stability point is reached This has happened with caviar + anzac triangle coin From what I can see on ebay the downward move has began
