chettieyy Valued Member United States 297 Posts	Posted 06/24/2014 11:46 pm Ok I am very new to taking photo's of coins but I do understand the basics of working the camera and even some of the more advanced settings. As for lighting, well I'm working on that so bear with me please while I figure this out. Currently I am using my point n click canon Powershot A3300 on a tripod shooting through the right eyepiece of my trinocular microscope which seems to be working pretty well I think.. Anyway here are some pics I took quick as a starting point on where to go from here. Photo's were taken with macro function on with two fluorescent lamps with the lighting diffused. Now I just need to go dig out some good coins to work with. Thanks for any and all critic Report this Post to the Staff

CherreePicker Valued Member 440 Posts	Posted 06/25/2014 06:19 am Not bad for a point & shoot camera. The nickel & quarter have areas that appear a little out of focus. A better light source may help also to even out the lighting. One of the things I did when using a Canon powershot was to shoot coin pics outside in natural light which helped with the lighting issue. Of course you have to wait for Mother Nature to provide the right lighting. Report this Post to the Staff

Try it at as high an angle that you can get: -- without the camera in the way, and -- without creating a hot spot on the coin. Report this Post to the Staff

Start with one at a high angle (to the northwest); add the second one only if needed. Stay away from Proof and Proof-like coins to begin with. And later think about getting a camera stand; they work better than a tripod. I found with a tripod one leg always seemed to get in the way. Here's my setup: Report this Post to the Staff
