Your first coin is struck through a late stage die cap. Your 1912 has some dirt or epoxy like material attached to it.

I would say they are. They sell well on ebay if that is any indicator. It is a very nice find, congrats!

Relative I suppose, but I've never found one in thousands and thousands of coins searched. Rare by my standard.

I feel your pain, Rackster, I have searched north of 400,000 cents in the last couple of years and have found exactly 2 of them...

Wow... I got this one in change a few years ago and just stuck it in a 2 x 2 because it looked weird. I ran across it this morning and figured I would ask if it was mint damage or not. Thanks for the info. I googled ".late stage die caps an read all about it.

Sudz - I'm not that deep into the count, perhaps half of what you searched (and spread over a few decades), but with that in mind, I must be due! LOL (I need to get a lottery ticket perhaps with that kind of thinking)
