We all know there is only one thing which we remember more than the coins we win, the ones we don't. So thought it would be interesting to hear about the coins you wish you had bid a bit more for, passed up only to regret later or even coins you were simply outbid for.

My contribution happened only last night.
The first coin is a light tetrobol of Perdikkas II of Macedon. Bid 110 euros for it into the last few seconds only to lose it at 120 euros.
The-Ones-That-Got-Away

In brief he was active diplomatically and militarily with a massive achievement in integrating Amphipolis into Macedonia whose primary export of timber and Athens dependence on these exports for her fleets gave Macedonia not only massive profits but also massive power over Athens. Over the next century Athen's colonial empire as well as her naval dominance would disintegrate.

The second coin is a half? unit of Kassander of Macedon (Cassander however you prefer spelling it.) Bid 110 euros again for the coin and was at 90 euros going into the last 20 seconds only to watch the bids go up quickly to 140 euros in the last 10.
The-Ones-That-Got-Away

Kassander came to power after murdering Roxane and Alexander IV, Alexander the Great's heir. Kassander was involved in a number of conflicts however his rule was focused primarily on the core of his empire Macedonia. He was most well known for the commissioning of a large number of public works.

An auction that I was very anxious about was ending as you posted this, so I was ready to post the coins to this thread... however, I ended up winning!

I've had such trouble completing my FAO $4 set... just yesterday I let the Montserrat issue get through my fingers for $29... I was outbid by only a dollar.

Short story:

Several years ago I mentioned in a post at Forum that my all time coin collecting fantasy would be to come across an auction or dealer's listing that had a Sellwood type 83 Parthian drachm (Unknown King III) that was misidentified as a common Vologases III (Sellwood type 78). The Unknown King III is extremely rare and valuable, whereas the Volo III drachms are very common and relatively cheap. Thing is, to someone who doesn't handle Parthian coins on a regular basis, mistaking these for one another would be easy to do. While indeed they look very similar (except for the number of bands on the obverse diadem), the difference in value is typically more than a thousand dollars.

When I wrote about my dream those couple of years back, I never really thought it could happen. However, just several months ago a European auction house make the mistake I'd been waiting for. I couldn't believe it. As I spotted this coin, below, on an auction website, I realized they had it listed erroneously (as the common Vologases III). I placed a bid that was a good deal higher than a Volo III drachm would have been worth, but low enough (I thought) that my bid wouldn't raise any suspicions at the auction house...Figuring "caveat venditor" (seller beware), I frankly didn't want to let the cat out the bag.

In the end a bidder at the live auction in Europe, who undoubtedly like me understood what the coin was, outbid me. Darn!

Gee Bob L that is really really unlucky and that is a really nice coin. Wow BobAlmighty125 that is pretty big, think it just eclipses the Australian Crowns by a mm or two.

oh man....several for me. a pretty 43 mm syrian redish ptolemy still haunts me. there are a couple recently that I spotted, and missed putting down a bid before teh end time of the auction that I probably would have won.
