Hummm I got a gold donald duck coin from NZ. I just got a call from fedex saying that I have to pay 116.00$ in customs.... I thought gold coins were tax exempt in canada? Any of you guys ran into the same thing? What do I do to not have to pay that?
Thx for your tips!

The shipper might have just put that it was a $1000 (or whatever) regular purchase and customs is billing you like it's a camcorder or computer or something.
I can see why you wouldn't want to mark "pure gold" on a box.

most likely, I still haven't received it but what do I do with those fees? that's kinda expensive for something I shouldn't have to pay in the first place...

Dominic, Your gold coins IS tax exempt, but customs charge fees from time to time, no matter what's written on the package. Even some package with the correct description (gold 99.99% pure or the correct international code for tax-exempt gold or precious metal coins) get duties/taxes sometimes. It's all manual and YMMV.
Actually, I'm not sure of the process for FEDEX, but you don't have to pay it. You can go and ask for a reevaluation, or argue it's tax exempt, etc. and they shouldn't charge you anything... not even their famous "custom paperwork fees". If the whole package is tax-exempt, no fees is charged.
I started a whole HOW-TO thread in the other forum for CanadaPost, not sure I can post the link here tough...
It shouldn't be too much difficult to not pay the duty/taxes after you say it's tax-exempt, but maybe a little more for the "service" FEDEX gave you in handling the paperwork... which is ridiculous actually!

That price is pretty accurate to 13% HST tax (as in Ontario), and as such, you need only have Fed-Ex re-evaluate your package. They usually aren't very obliging in this, so might need the seller to send you a more detailed invoice - including the fact that the coin is pure gold, and therefor not taxable.
Good Luck - I've had a lot of frustration with Fed Ex on exactly this issue. There is no easy way to convince them that they are wrong. Essentially, that's what you are asking them to admit.

Just contact fedex broker department with supporting documents of .999 pure gold coin and they will resubmit the forms for you, they might charge you a small fee.

I called fed ex and all they did was email me a dispute form and told me no way around brokerage fee. To make account they want credit card number and I will not give that to those thieves who knows what they will charge on there then you will have to fight that. I will just add the $10 brokerage fee to the price of coin and get the refund on the GST portion. It was free shipping after all almost

Quite simple do not use FEDEX......they are brutal. If the seller refuses to use any service of your choice deal elsewhere.

If the coin is 999 gold, it should be tax exempt. However, if you live in BC, you might still be subjected to PST if you are purchasing the gold coin based on numismatic value and not bullion value. I find fedex much friendlier compared to UPS.

@Pacificoin I did not really have any say in which carrier they were using. I just ordered from NZ mint and they are the ones who shipped it.
@MJT yes, the coin is 999 gold. so that shouldn't be an issue.
I called FEDEX back and inquired about it. they said they would "resubmit" to customs and see what they say. but honestly, I really don't want to pay for something that should be free. I shouldn't also have "Fees" for cancelling what they want to charge me! that sounds just like a rip off... well I guess i'll know more about it sometimes today... If I do pay those fees, how hard is it to get reimbursed after?

@Dominic... My Silver & Gold Donalds are now at the Dartmouth Fedex depot so I should get them today so I'm probably going to have the same issue's you have. I didn't think there were going to be any extra charges but probably going to get dinged with HST & brokerage fees..

Go back to them and instead of being argumentative, pretend like you're helping them out. "Somebody underneath you made this mistake so let's clean it up together." , "We should get this corrected quickly before your boss notices." , "I wouldn't want you to lose your lob over this." , "This could create an international incident." , "Can I talk to your higher-ups?" , "I have it in writing; let me email it to you quickly so we can review the law together."
Get to the bottom of it. 999 fine gold is tax exempt in Canada, but I thought that was if you bought the piece in Canada, not from overseas. Dunno... Send them an invoice for madeup stuff - it seems to be okay in their playbook.
