I have an 1805 Mexico contemporary counterfeit in an NGC slab.
See here...

Aren't coins in these slabs supposed to be genuine?

NGC says nothing about a counterfeit. It's likely that:

a) It's genuine
b) Or NGC's graders mixed up a contemporary for a genuine once again,

"Option B" happens more than you think. My local dealer often buys 8 reales which will grade Not Genuine at PCGS and then grade genuine at NGC or vice versa.
The TPG's haven't taken enough time to educate their graders about what are some of the most convincing Contemporary Counterfeits of the time. They're just hogging all the money they can find and hoping noone will notice. Maybe PCGS should just stick to US coins.

The determination of what is a modern counterfeit and what is genuine, is pretty easy to determine if you have even to slightest knowledge of 8R coins and their counterfeit markers.

Determining a contemporary counterfeit from a genuine 8R is still a very inexact science. For every person that will tell you why a coin is genuine, there is a person that will tell you why it is a counterfeit.

Metal analysis seems to be the way to go , but even that has come under scrutiny. Just ask swamperbob how many times he has had to edit his book due to new developments in the field. Since many old coins were melted and restruck, many people say that only 20% (if I remember correctly ?) of all 8R coins may actually be genuine.

I'm just proud of my coin in it's slab. Someone else started the thread on slabbing portrait 8 reales.

Some of the replies here are baffling...

It is slabbed as a genuine coin. It is actually a contemporary counterfeit.

The problem is self-evident, no?
